COVINGTON, Ky. – Less than a week after being arrested on drunk-driving charges in Kentucky, Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga has pleaded guilty to drunk driving after entering a not guilty plea.
Maualuga, 23, appeared in a Kenton County court Tuesday morning where he pleaded guilty to DUI and careless driving stemming from the Jan. 29 incident.
Rey was arrested early Friday morning for driving drunk in Covington. Police say Maualuga hit two parked cars and a parking metering on Friday morning on Scott Street.
“I would just like too apologize to my family, Mike Brown, the Bengals organization and coaches and teammates and fans and city of Cincinnati for bringing such humiliation and embarrassment to the team. Secondly, I would like to thank everybody, the Bengals organization family and friends for being by my side and supporting me throughout all this. I will learn from this and become a better person and a better man from all this and I will assure you this will never happen again.”
The judge, Ken Easterling, sentenced Maualuga to seven days in jail but probated that sentence for two years. Maualuga has to stay out of trouble for the next two years or he will have to serve those seven days. Also Maualuga’s driver’s license was suspended for 90 days, gave him a $350 fine and ordered him to undergo an alcohol education program.
The police report indicates Maualuga’s blood alcohol level was 0.157, nearly twice the legal limit in Kentucky.
Maualuga could also faces punishment from the National Football League. His arrest is a violation of the NFL conduct policy. He could be fined the equivalent of two game checks — a minimum of $50,000.
