CINCINNATI, OH. — Bengals tackle Andre Smith fractured his foot just two days after ending his training camp holdout. Five months later, he finally underwent surgery last week.
Smith broke his foot in his third practice of the season and the Bengals indicated back then that they were going to treat it conservatively because that type of break usually heals on its own. After the season they decided to place a screw in it when it didn’t heal as expected.
After undergoing surgery to place a screw in his foot, right tackle Andre Smith is going to be back in the weight room this week lifting despite being on crutches for the next two weeks. Even though he can’t run on land for the next two months, it’s believed he’ll be on the underwater treadmill within a month and that he’ll be back on the practice field in time for the start of the May camps.
The Bengals survived with a redshirt year from Smith last year, but they need him to win the team’s starting right tackle job. Judging by offensive line coach Paul Alexander’s comments last month, Smith did enough last season to be the heavy favorite for the job.
