DeMarcus Cousins Named SEC Freshman of the Week

The honor is the third Freshman of the Week award for Cousins this season and his fourth weekly award this year. Cousins was named the SEC Player of the Week on Jan. 4.

LEXINGTON, KY – UK men’s basketball player DeMarcus Cousins was named the SEC Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.

Cousins, a 6-11 forward from Birmingham, Ala., averaged 18.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in wins over No. 25 Ole Miss and at LSU. He had double-double efforts with 18 points and 13 rebounds against Ole Miss and then 19 points and 14 rebounds at LSU. He has recorded six straight double-doubles, becoming the first Wildcat since 1989 to accomplish that feat. Cousins’ 14 double-doubles on the season lead the SEC and are the most by a UK player since 2000.

The honor is the third Freshman of the Week award for Cousins this season and his fourth weekly award this year. Cousins was named the SEC Player of the Week on Jan. 4.

The Wildcats have now been awarded a league record 11 weekly awards from the SEC this season. Freshman John Wall has been named the league’s freshman of the week four times, while Cousins (SEC Player of the Week and SEC Freshman of the Week) has been honored four times and Bledsoe twice. Patrick Patterson was named SEC Player of the Week in week two.
