CINCINNATI — Former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones has agreed to a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.
Jones, a first round pick by the Jaguars in 2005, was also offered a contract by the Tennessee Titans, according to several reports. He reportedly worked out for the Bengals on Thursday.
Jones, 26, was released by Jacksonville before last season following an arrest for a probation violation. In 2008, he was suspended for three games following a drug arrest.
The 6’6″ Jones played quarterback for the University of Arkansas, but like many players, he changed positions upon entering the NFL. Jacksonville took him with the 21st pick in hopes that his size, speed and athleticism would translate to success as a wide receiver.
Jones will add depth to a Bengals passing attack that struggled in the 2009 season, despite winning the AFC North. He is also a solid red zone threat, something the Bengals had with the late Chris Henry.
Jones has 166 catches for 2,153 yards and 15 touchdowns in 54 games.
He has not lived up to the hype surrounding him when he came into the league. But, a change of scenery and a new offense could be what he needs.
Cincinnati has yet to officially announce the signing, but the deal is reportedly a one-year contract.
The former Razorback was not the only Jones who worked out for the Bengals on Thursday. Several reports indicate Adam “Pacman” Jones also worked out for coaches at Paul Brown Stadium.
The former Tennessee Titan and Dallas Cowboy has not played in the National Football League since the 2008 season. He was suspended for the entire 2007 season and part of the 2008 season. He was traded to Dallas who released him in February 2009.
