CINCINNATI — The Reds, which have spent much of their offseason looking to add a veteran infielder, signed Miguel Cairo to a Minor League contract and invited him to big league camp.
Cairo, 35, split last season with the Phillies and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. In 27 games with Philadelphia, he batted .267 with a .283 on-base percentage. He also appeared during the postseason.
Lifetime over 14 seasons and eight teams, Cairo is a .266 hitter with a .315 OBP.
Cincinnati has sought someone who could back up young Paul Janish at shortstop and play around the infield. While Cairo has played every position in the infield and both corner-outfield spots, he’s logged only 54 career games at shortstop, including 22 starts. He’s played most of his career at second base, where he has logged 727 games.
“We have a relatively young bench, and Miguel’s a solid veteran player with experience on championship teams,” Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said in a statement.
The Reds will have 57 players at Spring Training, including 17 non-roster players.
