MOREHEAD, Ky. — Kenneth Faried scored 15 points to help lead Morehead State past Tennessee-Martin 73-63 on Saturday night.

Terrance Hill and Les Simmons chipped in with 12 points each for the Eagles (21-9, 15-3 Ohio Valley Conference). Morehead State closed out its regular season winning four of its last five games.

The two teams were tied at 28 at halftime, but the Eagles used an 11-2 run in the second half to assume a 52-40 lead after a layup from Hill with 11:24 remaining in the contest. Tennessee-Martin cut the deficit to four points, but was unable to get any closer.

Marquis Weddle scored 20 points to pace the Skyhawks (4-25, 1-17), who lost their last six games.

Morehead State scored 25 points off of 20 Skyhawks turnovers.

The Eagles finished the season in the second spot of the OVC standings, while Tennessee-Martin finished in last place.

MOREHEAD, Ky. — Terrance Hill hit a 3-pointer with 39 seconds to go to help Morehead State stop Murray State‘s nation-leading 17-game win streak, 70-65, on Thursday night.

The Eagles (20-9, 14-3 Ohio Valley Conference) led 60-51 with 5:38 to go, but the Racers (26-4, 16-1) went on an 11-2 run to tie it on Isacc Miles’ two free throws with 1:14 remaining.

With a little more than 45 seconds left, Hill threw an inbounds pass to Demonte Harper, who handed it back to Hill for the game-winning 3.

Hill finished with 13 points, including 3 of 4 3-pointers. Kenneth Faried added 15 points and 11 rebounds for Morehead State, which finished with back-to-back 20-win seasons and a 14-win conference slate for the first time in school history.

The Eagles shot 53.3 percent from the field (24 of 45) and scored 19 second-chance points.

Miles finished with 18 points for Murray State.

Morehead State 62, Illinois State 71

NORMAL, Ill. — Osiris Eldridge had 26 points and nine rebounds to lead Illinois State to a 71-62 victory over Morehead State on Saturday.

Dinma Odiakosa had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Redbirds (20-8) in the BracketBusters game. Alex Rubin had 15 points and Justin Clark 10 for Illinois State, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference that reached the 20-victory mark for the third straight season.

Eldridge scored 18 of his points in the first half.

Kenneth Faried had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead Morehead State (19-9). The Ohio Valley Conference school trailed 34-30 at halftime. Steve Peterson and Demonte Harper each scored 11 points for the Eagles.

Eagles Fry Colonels, Win Record 13th OVC Game To Clinch Second Place

MOREHEAD, Ky. — Maze Stallworth scored 20 points and Morehead State beat Eastern Kentucky 77-64 on Wednesday night.

The Eagles (19-8, 13-3 Ohio Valley Conference) shot 56.3 percent (18 of 32) in the first half and led 45-25 at halftime.

Kenneth Faried, who finished with 15 points and 16 rebounds, had five points and five boards in the first 2 minutes, sparking Morehead State to a 9-2 lead.

After the Colonels (18-10, 10-6) pulled within 11-8 on Josh Taylor’s dunk, Morehead State answered with 10 straight points to go ahead 21-8 with 10:21 left in the first half.

Steve Peterson added 15 points and Demonte Harper 11 for the Eagles.

Eastern Kentucky shot 37 percent from the field (21 of 57), and had two of its top three scorers, Justin Stommes (14.7 points per game) and Papa Oppong (11.3), combine for four points.

Josh Taylor paced Eastern Kentucky with 21 points.

Eagles Drop Gut Wrencher on the Road at EIU, 76-75

CHARLESTON, Ill. — Tyler Laser hit two free throws on a technical foul with 1 second left as Eastern Illinois edged Morehead State 76-75 on Thursday night.

Maze Stallworth drained a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left to put Morehead State ahead 75-74.

As the Panthers came up the court, the ball was knocked away, and a Morehead State player tried to call a timeout. But the Eagles had used all their timeouts, so a technical was called, and Laser hit the free throws.

James Hollowell had 23 points, Laser 16 and Jeremy Granger 10 for the Panthers (13-11, 7-7 Ohio Valley).

Eastern Illinois shot 57.8 percent (26 of 45) from the field and 95.5 percent (21 of 22) from the line.

Kenneth Faried led the Eagles (17-8, 11-3) with 19 points but had his string of nine straight double-doubles halted with seven rebounds. Stallworth scored 18 points and Demonte Harper 15.

Maze Stallworth poured in a season high 26 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and tallied 11 rebounds to lead Morehead State to a 94-75 victory over Jacksonville State Thursday night in Johnson Arena.

MOREHEAD, Ky. — Maze Stallworth scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help Morehead State defeat Jacksonville State 94-75 on Thursday night.

The Eagles (16-7, 10-2 Ohio Valley Conference), averaging six 3-pointers a game, made a season-high 13 of 27 (48.1 percent) against the Gamecocks (10-12, 5-7).

Morehead State held a 25-7 rebounding advantage in the first half, building a 52-36 halftime lead.

The Eagles outrebounded Jacksonville State 41-20 in the game, which helped lead to 19 more shots than the Gamecocks.

Demonte Harper scored 18 points and Kenneth Faried had his 17th double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, before fouling out with 11:16 remaining.

Nick Murphy scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Gamecocks, who shot 55.8 percent from the field (24 of 43). Jeremy Bynum added 15 points and Dominique Shellman 14 for Jacksonville State.

The Eagles fell to 15-7 and 9-2 in the OVC, while Austin Peay upped its mark to 13-10 and 7-4 in the conference.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — Justin Blake hit a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left and Austin Peay defeated Morehead State 56-55 on Sunday, snapping an 11-game winning streak.

The Governors (13-10, 7-4 Ohio Valley Conference) trailed 51-40 with 6:03 left, but went on an 11-1 run. Wes Channels’ layup pulled the Governors within 52-51 with 1:46 remaining.

Terrance Hill then hit two free throws to give Morehead State (15-7, 9-2) a 54-51 lead with 1:26 left. But Blake’s layup pulled the Governors back within one 23 seconds later.

Kenneth Faried went to the free throw line for the Eagles with 33 seconds left, but made just one of two, allowing the Governors to take their first lead since 11-9 with 12:40 left in the first half.

Blake finished with 14 points for Austin Peay, which shot 54.5 percent in the second half (12 of 22).

Faried scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Eagles.

APSU outscored the Eagles 16-7 over the next eight minutes, and with less than two minutes left on the game clock, the Govs cut the game to one at 52-51. A pair of Hill free throws made it a 54-51 Eagle lead. Blake hit a runner in the lane, and then Faried made one of two free throws on the Eagle end of the floor. With MSU ahead 55-53, Blake nailed a clutch three to give his team a one-point lead with 10 seconds remaining.

Harper got a five-foot jump shot in the lane with three seconds left, and Stallworth tried to tip in the miss but the ball rimmed out and time expired.

“We ran a clear out for Demonte and we got the shot we wanted, it just didn’t go down,” said Tyndall.
MSU shot 38 percent for the game. The Govs shot 42 percent and turned it over 21 times.

The Eagles return home for an OVC contest versus Jacksonville State Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

SIU-Edwardsville 46, Morehead State 66

MOREHEAD, Ky—This one didn’t start the way the last two did, but it finished in similar fashion.

Morehead State men’s basketball ran away with a 66-46 win over SIU Edwardsville Tuesday night at Johnson Arena. It marked the Eagles’ ninth straight win, equaling the longest streak since the 2002-03 season.

Every Eagle that played except one scored, but Kenneth Faried was the only MSU player to tally double-digits, finishing with 23 points and 16 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season. His 16 rebounds also pushed his average, which leads the nation, to 13.2 per game. Demonte Harper and Sam Goodman each had eight points.

MSU, which opened big lead in the first half of two games last week to cruise to a pair of wins, didn’t get hot until late in the first half. Unlike those two games it was the other bench that was hot. SIU Edwardsville started fast and turned an early one-point deficit into a six-point lead with seven straight points from a 3-pointer and two free throws by Aamir McCleary and a layup from Anthony Mitchell.

“I thought that our team for the first time in eight or nine games didn’t have the energy,” Tyndall said. “We didn’t play our best, we didn’t play with the enthusiasm and passion I would have liked to see.”

A pair of layups from Faried closed the gap and then the teams traded buckets for the next four minutes. Trailing by four with 6:56 to play in the half, Peterson drove in for a lay-up that sparked a 17-2 Eagle run that didn’t end until McCleary hit a jumper with 1:52 to play in the half. Three free throws, two by Terrance Hill and one by Brandon Shingles gave MSU a 12-point intermission advantage, their largest lead of the half.

Morehead State(13-6) pushed the lead to 18 on five straight points mid-way through the second half and took it as high as 23 on a late 3-pointer by Ty Proffitt before the Cougars hit their own triple for the final margin of 20.

It was the sixth time this season and third straight game in which the Eagles have held their opponent under 60 points. Shingles led a 12-steal effort by the Eagles with five takeaways and Faried recorded four rejections defensively. MSU pulled down 26 defensive rebounds, 12 of which came courtesy of Faried.

“Defensively we put up really big numbers,” Tyndall said.

Only McCleary finished in double-digit scoring for the Cougars and he and Mitchell shared rebounding honors with five apiece. McCleary also had five assists and three steals.

SIUE (2-16) is transitioning to NCAA Division I and has joined the OVC, but do not count as a conference opponent until 2011-12 when they complete the transition.

The Eagles travel to Richmond, Ky. To face arch-rival Eastern Kentucky Saturday at 7 p.m. at McBrayer Arena. Both teams will be defending winning streaks, the Colonels have won 19 straight at home and MSU has won nine consecutive games.

“The EKU rivalry is a rivalry that goes back years and years. Someone’s streak is going to end that night,” Tyndall said.

LOGAN, Utah, — Kenneth Faried scored 19 points, including seven in the final 4-minutes,

and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead Morehead State past Cal State Fullerton 69-62 Wednesday night.

Demonte Harper had 18 points and Maze Stallworth also added 13 for the Eagles (5-6).

The Titans (4-6) were led by Devon Peltier with 15, shooting 5 of 7 from the 3-point line. Orane Chin added 11 points and Jer’Vaughn Johnson 10.

Pelteir hit a 3-point shot with 5:10 to play to give the Titans a 59-55 edge, but Morehead would get three steals, two resulting in scores, in the final 3:50.

Neither team held an advantage in the first half, as the lead changed eight times and was tied six times. Fullerton attempted 13 3-point shots in the first half, hitting six. They led 37-34 at halftime.

The game was part of the three-day Basketball Travelers Invitational, hosted by Utah State.

Morehead State 72, Utah State 79

LOGAN, Utah — Nate Bendall and Tai Wesley each scored 18 points to lead Utah State past Morehead State 79-72 Monday night.

Tyler Newbold also scored 15 for the Aggies (7-4). The win came in the opening round of the three-day Basketball Travelers Invitational, hosted by Utah State.

Morehead State (4-5) was led by Steve Peterson, who scored a career-high 16 points. Kenneth Faried added 14, and Terrance Hill and Demonte Harper each had 12.

After the Aggies extended to a 52-37 lead to open the second half, the Eagles went on a 14-4 run to bring the score to 56-51 with less than nine minutes to play.

Morehead State shot 20-of-30 from the field and 3-of-6 from the 3-point line in the second half. They eventually would close to 75-72 on a short jumper by Faried with 17 seconds to play.

But Utah State dropped in 4-of-4 free-throw attempts in the closing seconds.
