Pitching coach showed success in Arizona and Seattle

By Scott Merkin / MLB.com

10/17/09 8:10 PM ET

Reds president of baseball operations and general manager Walt Jocketty did not set a strict timetable to hire a new Major League pitching coach when he spoke about the topic on Monday from organizational meetings at Cincinnati’s new complex in Goodyear, Ariz.

“We want to get it done sooner than later,” Jocketty said. “When we find the right guy, we’ll move on it.”

Apparently, Bryan Price was that “right guy.”

Price was named pitching coach for Reds manager Dusty Baker’s staff on Saturday, replacing Dick Pole who was dismissed on Oct. 2. Price, 47, spent the past 10 seasons as a pitching coach in the Major Leagues, holding that position with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2006 until he resigned on May 8 after manager Bob Melvin was replaced by A.J. Hinch.

Speaking by phone, Price expressed excitement in taking on this National League Central challenge.

“It’s going to be a really good group to work with,” Price said. “I’m absolutely thrilled.”

Before joining the D-backs, Price spent six seasons as pitching coach for the Seattle Mariners, including the 2003 and ’04 campaigns when the club was managed by Melvin. Price said that he discussed the job with the Reds last week and was truly impressed with what he heard in the face-to-face meeting, which of course included Jocketty and Baker.

The course of Price’s career has afforded him the chance to work with successful managers such as Lou Piniella, Mike Hargrove and Melvin. Adding Baker to this list was another motivating factor for Price.

“I feel honored to spend time with him and learn from him,” said Price of Baker. “That was a big motivation for me. I look at this as a great opportunity to learn from a tremendous baseball man.

“They have a real idea in what they wanted to accomplish, where they are going,” said Price of the Reds’ overall leadership. “And they are definitely moving in that direction.”

A first task at hand for Price will be to become familiar with the organization. For example, talking to people in player development who have worked with some of the young pitchers over the years. Price is somewhat familiar with the Reds hurlers at the big league level, although admittedly not as familiar as a coach who would have spent his prior years in the Central divisions.

But Price stressed on Saturday that he has a strong feeling about the pitching depth throughout the Reds’ system, one of the factors drawing him to Cincinnati. Price will also start phone work with some of the primary pitchers on the staff to establish an early understanding of his philosophy.

“My main goal is when the pitchers come to Spring Training, they know what’s ahead of them,” Price said. “There are no surprises, in regard to the pitching workload at Spring Training or the conditioning.

“We want them to understand our philosophy and how we go about business. I feel like I have to be proactive in this job, and I can’t wait for Spring Training and tell them what I want. They need to know that as they go into offseason workouts.”

In 2001, while with the Mariners, Price earned USA Today Baseball Weekly’s Pitching Coach of the Year Award after leading that staff to the AL ERA title with a 3.54 mark, an improvement of almost one run per game from the previous season. Before joining Seattle’s Major League staff, Price was a pitching coach in the Mariners’ Minor League system from 1989-97 before serving as the organization’s pitching coordinator in 1998 and ’99.

He also pitched for five seasons in the Angels’ and Mariners’ Minor League systems. Price was named Major League Coach of the Year by Baseball America in 2007 after his D-backs staff posted a 4.13 ERA, fourth best in the NL, on the way to the National League Championship Series. His 2008 starting staff led the Majors with 95 quality starts, ranked second in the league with 65 wins and ranked fourth with a 3.95 ERA, Arizona’s lowest team ERA since 2003.

Former A’s and Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson had expressed interest in the job as well, although Peterson is also believed to be a possibility for the Brewers’ pitching coach opening. When questioned about the position earlier in the week, Jocketty passed on naming people from within the organization who could be candidates, before deciding on Price.

“We’re very excited to be able to hire someone with Bryan’s background and history of success,” said Jocketty in a statement announcing Saturday’s hiring.

Price is looking forward to the challenge of making his imprint on the Reds’ staff in 2010.

“You know what? I know there is a lot of excitement with what the bullpen was able to do and how, when healthy, that rotation can be really quality — one through five,” Price said. “You can’t have the depth of a 12-man pitching staff unless you have 18 to 20 guys who can pitch at that level over the course of a year, and it looks like we have a fine group of pitchers — with seasoned veterans and young, quality arms.”

CINCINNATI — Third baseman Chris Sabo and pitchers Pedro Borbon and the late Tony Mullane have been selected by fans and the Veterans Committee into the Reds Hall of Fame Class of 2010.

Sabo was the choice in fan voting that was announced Tuesday. The former All-Star and NL Rookie of the Year was a fixture on the 1990 team that won the Reds’ last World Series.

Borbon was chosen by a committee, along with Mullane, who was the Reds’ top pitcher from 1886 to 1892. Borbon was an important part of the Big Red Machine’s bullpen in the 1970s, appearing in more games than any other NL pitcher from 1970-78. The Reds won back-to-back World Series titles in 1975-76.

The trio will be honored next summer at Great American Ball Park. Sabo was selected by fans through the Modern Player Ballot sponsored by Cincyfavorites.com. Paul O’Neill was second to Sabo in fan voting, and John Franco was third.

That puts the Hall’s membership to 72 players, three managers and three executives.

CINCINNATI — The Reds’ last man standing led them to one final win.

Brandon Phillips — the lone Cincinnati regular who avoided the disabled list in 2009 — drove in three runs Sunday, and Homer Bailey shut out Pittsburgh for six innings, setting up a 6-0 victory as the NL Central’s two forlorn franchises ended the season together.

The Pirates finished their 17th straight losing season, while the Reds completed their ninth in a row.

Phillips was the Reds’ only regular starting player who wasn’t caught up in the run of nonstop injuries. He had an RBI double in the first off Jeff Karstens (4-6), a run-scoring groundout and another RBI double.

Phillips finished with 98 RBIs. He had a chance to get those last two to reach 100, but grounded into a double play with the bases loaded in the sixth.

“It was a great journey trying to get to 100. I just fell short,” Phillips said. “You learn from your mistakes. I had plenty of chances early in the season. I’m happy with the year I had. I’m very satisfied.”

Bailey (8-5) finished his breakout season by improving to 4-0 career against the Pirates. The 23-year-old pitcher went 6-1 with a 1.70 ERA down the stretch, making him a top candidate for next year’s rotation.

“The way we’ve been playing the last month and a half made it a lot easier for me to go out there,” Bailey said. “I think everybody here has a lot of confidence and a lot of potential, but ‘potential’ means you haven’t done anything.”

The Pirates’ 17 consecutive losing seasons are a record for a major professional team in North America. They underwent another near-total makeover at midseason and wound up losing 99 games with a cast of young players that collapsed down the stretch.

After Pittsburgh moved out of the basement on Aug. 22 — a game ahead of Cincinnati — the Pirates went 11-29 the rest of the way, clinching last place.

They found an appropriate way to finish it — their 17th shutout loss, the most in the majors.

“It was kind of the season wrapped up into a game,” manager John Russell said, referring to the 13 stranded runners. “It will be a big emphasis next year — getting RBIs when they’re out there.”

The Reds extended their deepest slump in more than a half-century, done in by the never-ending injuries that set up a July meltdown. Four-fifths of the starting rotation and seven of the eight opening-day regulars spent time on the disabled list.

Cincinnati finished on an upswing, winning 27 of its last 40 games to finish 78-84, four games better than last season. Pitching coach Dick Pole was fired on Friday, but manager Dusty Baker has one season remaining on his three-year deal.

The years of losing and the economic downturn took a toll on attendance at Great American Ball Park. The Reds sold 1,747,919 tickets this season, their smallest gate since 1986.

Game notes
The Pirates led the majors with only 73 errors, fewest in franchise history. The previous club mark was 83 in 2007. … Pittsburgh matched its franchise records by using 49 players, including 26 pitchers, to get through another season of in-flux lineups. … FOX Sports Ohio broadcaster George Grande, who did the Reds’ television play-by-play for the last 17 years, opted out of the final year of his contract to spend more time at home. In the middle of the sixth inning, the fans gave an extended standing ovation for Grande and Hal McCoy, the Dayton Daily News baseball writer retiring after his 37th season. … Phillips’ 98 RBIs were the second-most by a second baseman in Reds history. Joe Morgan drove in 110 in 1976, when the Big Red Machine won its second straight World Series title.

CINCINNATI — John Smoltz had trouble gripping the ball Wednesday night and is hoping he still has a chance at being a postseason starter for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Smoltz gave up Laynce Nix’s first career grand slam in four shaky innings as the Cardinals lost 6-1 to the Cincinnati Reds.

St. Louis has dropped three straight since clinching the NL Central title with a 6-3 win Saturday at Colorado and lost five of six overall. Smoltz (1-3) gave up six runs and six hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

“I’m not even going to look at it as a game I can get really mad about,” Smoltz said. “I’m certainly not going to look at my body of work and say this game was indicative of the way I’ve been throwing.”

Manager Tony La Russa was more concerned about his team’s lack of offense.

“The score is what it is and that’s all I’m going to say about it,” La Russa said. “I take a positive in that they scored six runs early and didn’t score any more after that. We got just one run. Obviously, there is more that our offense should produce.”

Bronson Arroyo allowed one run and four hits in 8 1/3 innings, falling just short of his fourth complete game of the season. The right-hander improved to 7-5 with a 2.07 ERA in his last 16 starts, tying his career high with his 15th victory of the season.

“I’m happy with my season,” said Arroyo, who didn’t miss a start despite getting two cortisone shots in his right hand to treat carpal tunnel syndrome. “It hasn’t gone the way we wanted it to as a team, but physically, I felt good. Those two shots got me where I am now.”

Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker replaced Arroyo with Nick Masset after Mark DeRosa flied out with a runner on first, bringing Albert Pujols to the plate.

“He said he was running on empty and his legs were spent,” Baker said. “When I heard that, you go get him, especially late in the season, 111 pitches and Pujols up there.”

The Cardinals loaded the bases before Ryan Ludwick struck out to end the game.

Cincinnati scored twice in the second and four in the third as Smoltz struggled with his control. The gametime temperature was 59 degrees, and the right-hander had trouble gripping the ball. He tossed several out of play even before trying to pitch with them.

Balls are supposed to be rubbed with a special mud before each game, a job usually performed by the home team’s clubhouse crew.

“I’ve been pitching a long time,” Smoltz said. “It’s the worst baseballs I’ve ever pitched with in my life. The other guy was pitching with them, too. He did a nice job. It was part of the battle. I went out and battled. I had no feel for the baseball. That’s about the worst thing you can have as a pitcher. They were brand new. They were absolutely not rubbed up. You can blame it on the weather but the balls were not rubbed up.”

“They were fine for me,” Arroyo said. “They don’t mud them up as much here as they do at other places. It was a cool night, and it’s hard to hold on sometimes.”

Smoltz threw 43 of his 87 pitches in the second and issued three of his five walks, including one to Drew Stubbs with the bases loaded that gave Cincinnati a 2-0 lead. Two more walks sandwiched around Scott Rolen’s double loaded the bases before Nix’s 15th homer of the season.

“We really wanted to win this one for Bronson,” Nix said. “He’s been so solid all year, especially the last two months. We were happy that we were able to finish this one off and get this win.”

Smoltz, who signed with St. Louis as a free agent on Aug. 19, is 0-3 in six starts since winning at San Diego in his Cardinals debut on Aug. 23.

Arroyo (15-13) retired his first nine batters before Skip Schumaker led off the fourth with a sinking liner to left that just got under the glove of the diving Nix. After DeRosa struck out, Pujols lined an RBI single into center field.

Game notes
Arroyo also had 15 wins last season for the Reds. … Cincinnati activated OF Chris Dickerson from the 15-day disabled list before the game. Dickerson had been on the DL since Aug. 25 with a severely sprained left ankle. … RHP Justin Lehr will start for Cincinnati on Friday against Pittsburgh instead of LHP Matt Maloney, who needs more time to get completely over a blister on his left middle finger.
