LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky basketball players and coach John Calipari raised $1 million with a telethon on a Lexington TV station.
The four-hour “Hoops for Haiti” Telethon on WKYT-TV Sunday received pledges of about $500,000. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that total will be matched by a group that includes Calipari.
Callers from as far away as Arizona and Montana made donations.
Notable donors included UK Basketball Coach Tubby Smith and commentator Dick Vitale, who each gave $1,000. Former UK player Nazr Mohammed gave $10,000.
Items that remain at auction on ebay include dinner at the Calipari’s, with Wildcats fan Ashley Judd.
All the money donated is going to the United Way and Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.
