DAYTON, Ohio – After taking a 5-0 lead, the Xavier baseball team gave up eight runs in the fifth to Wright State eventually falling, 11-5, to the host Raiders Wednesday night at Nischwitz Stadium. Senior Zac Richard got his first start of the season on the mound for the Musketeers after recovering from a broken hand.
In addition to throwing two innings for the Musketeers, Richard went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored to lead XU. Senior Bobby Freking and junior Phil Bauer also had multiple hits in the contest.
Xavier (5-19) put up five unanswered runs to open the game, including three in the third off four hits. Senior Drew Schmidt’s sacrifice fly scored freshman Seth Willoughby in the fourth and redshirt Neil Lindgren collected an RBI in the fifth with his single to left.
Wright State (8-10) hit through the order and scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead and take over the game. The Raiders ended up with three more runs in the contest to take the 11-5 victory.
Freshman Markus Kuykendoll (0-4) took the loss for the Musketeers after giving up six runs on seven hits and striking out two in 2.1 innings of work. Shane Liska, Nate Mutsch and Josh Murphy combined for 2.2 innings of relief while Alex Vice closed out the game, throwing the final inning of the game.
Travis Lamar (1-1) got the win for Wright State as he threw 1.1 innings giving up one run on two hits while striking out one and walking one.
The Musketeers return to action this weekend with a three-game Atlantic 10 stint at Richmond. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on April 4 in Richmond, Va.
