Xavier Baseball Closes Out Weekend with 17-1 Lost at Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Xavier baseball team lost, 17-1, Sunday afternoon at the University of Tennessee, closing out the Musketeers’ opening weekend of the 2010 season. Junior Phil Bauer scored the Musketeers’ lone run with a solo home run in the fifth, the first of his career.

In addition to Bauer’s homer, three other Musketeers tallied a hit on the day. Junior John McCambridge, last season’s stolen base leader, is on track again to lead the team again this season as he snatched two bases on the day.

Tennessee (3-0) got its offense going early, putting up three runs in the first inning. Two more runs from the Volunteers in the third gave UT the 5-0 lead through the end of the fourth.

Xavier (0-3) got on the board in the top of the fifth as Bauer led off the frame with a two-strike home run over the left field fence..

The Vols exploded for eight runs on four hits and one Musketeer error in the sixth inning to break the game open. Charley Thurber came into the game for UT in the frame and made the best of his at bat. With the bases loaded, Thurber sent a first-pitch grand slam over the right field fence and Tennessee went up by 12, 13-1.

Tennessee scored four more in the eighth to round out the day’s scoring. The Volunteers ended the day with a 17-1 advantage to sweep the weekend series, 3-0.

Freshman Jon Richard (0-1) took the loss for the Musketeers after throwing five innings in his first collegiate start. He gave up eight runs on six hits and struck out four while walking six. Freshman Seth Willoughby saw action in the sixth along with redshirt sophomore Shane Liska. Freshman Markus Kuykendoll tossed the seventh and redshirt sophomore Josh Murphy finished the game for XU in the eighth.

Stephen McCray (1-0) picked up the win for the Vols after putting in 5.1 innings of work. He gave up one run on three hits and struck out one batter while walking one.

The Musketeers will return to action next weekend as they travel to Atlanta, Ga., to play a three-game series at No. 6 Georgia Tech, Feb. 26-28.
